What Custom Software and App Development Really Costs in Dubai (2026)

Ask three Dubai development firms to quote the same app and you'll get AED 40,000, AED 180,000 and AED 600,000. None of them is necessarily lying — they're quoting different things, and the gap usually comes down to scope, seniority and how much of the build is genuinely custom. Here's what actually drives the number, so you can read a quote properly instead of just comparing the totals.

What you're really paying for

Software pricing is labour pricing. Every quote is essentially an estimate of how many people-weeks the build takes, multiplied by a day rate that reflects where those people sit and how senior they are. Three things move that estimate more than anything else:

Screens and flows. A five-screen app with a login, a list and a profile is a fundamentally different animal to one with role-based permissions, in-app payments and an admin dashboard behind it. Every distinct user journey is design, build, and testing effort — and the testing is the part people forget.

Integrations. Connecting to Stripe, a CRM, a delivery partner or a government API is where timelines quietly double. Each integration means reading someone else's documentation, handling their edge cases, and building fallbacks for when their service is down.

Custom backend vs off-the-shelf. If your data can live in an established platform, you save enormously. If you genuinely need bespoke logic — pricing rules, matching algorithms, multi-tenant permissions — that's real engineering, and it's where custom software earns its cost.

Realistic 2026 ranges in the UAE

Treat these as bands rather than quotes, because scope changes everything:

Simple app or MVP — AED 40,000–100,000. A focused product doing one job well: booking, ordering, a directory, an internal tool. Cross-platform build, standard integrations, a real design pass. This is the right starting point for most businesses testing an idea.

Mid-complexity product — AED 100,000–300,000. Multiple user types, payments, an admin panel, push notifications, meaningful backend logic. Most serious commercial apps land here.

Complex or enterprise platform — AED 300,000+. Heavy integrations, compliance requirements, real-time features, high-scale infrastructure. Regulated sectors sit here almost by default.

Websites and e-commerce — AED 8,000–60,000. A marketing site with strong SEO foundations sits at the lower end; a custom storefront with bespoke checkout logic sits at the top.

Then there's the part quotes routinely omit: ongoing costs. Hosting, monitoring, App Store fees, third-party services and maintenance typically run 15–20% of build cost annually. A product with no maintenance budget degrades — that's not pessimism, it's just how dependencies and operating systems work.

Where budgets actually get wasted

In our experience the money rarely disappears into engineering — it disappears into indecision. Scope that changes mid-build is the single most expensive thing that can happen to a project, because work already completed gets thrown away. A close second is building for imagined users instead of real ones: features nobody asked for, added "while we're at it," each carrying a testing and maintenance tail forever.

The third is picking on price alone. A quote 60% below the others usually means junior developers, no testing discipline, or a template dressed up as custom work — and you pay the difference later, in rebuilds.

How AI has changed the maths

This is the genuinely new part. AI-assisted development meaningfully compresses the production layer of software: boilerplate, test scaffolding, data plumbing, documentation and first-draft implementations. What it doesn't compress is architecture, judgement, security review or knowing what to build. So the honest version is that AI hasn't made software cheap — it's shifted the ratio, so a smaller senior team now ships what previously took a larger mixed one.

Practically, that means faster delivery and lower cost on well-scoped projects, and roughly unchanged cost on genuinely novel or complex ones. It's the same shift we've written about on the marketing side, and it's why we argue the agency model is being re-priced rather than replaced.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an app take to build in Dubai? A focused MVP typically runs 8–14 weeks from kickoff to launch; mid-complexity products 4–7 months. Anyone promising a real app in two weeks is showing you a template.

Should I build native or cross-platform? Cross-platform (React Native or Flutter) covers iOS and Android from one codebase and suits most business apps at meaningfully lower cost. Go native when you need heavy device performance, complex animations or deep platform features.

Do I own the code? You should — insist on it in writing, along with repository access from day one. If a developer resists handing over the repo, that's a serious signal.

Do I need a UAE trade license to publish an app? To sell through your company, yes — Apple and Google require a verified business entity, and UAE payment processing needs a licensed local entity.

Custom software or an off-the-shelf tool? Start with off-the-shelf. Build custom only when the tool genuinely can't do the thing that makes your business different — that's when the investment returns.

The right question isn't "what does an app cost" but "what's the smallest version that proves this works." If you'd like a straight, itemised scoping of your idea — no obligation — tell us about it.
